Hi, im in the navy, im a submarine machinist mate(mechanic) but i have a degree in business administration(human resources). Im going to take advantage and do my masters in IT mba while im in the navy, once I get that masters done what do you recommend me to do? Do you think a head chef can be someone who is bad or average at cooking? NO WAY! Only the top cooks can lead the team of cooks. Unfortunately this is far from reality in software development.
I am a programmer with 20+ years of experience and I met many bad IT managers (around 75%) and only around 25% that were ok or good. All the good IT managers that I had were also a great developers with many years of experience in development before they became managers. All the bad managers were bad developers or had no experience as developers. Maybe they are good in handling their bosses with politics but they are usually so bad for the project progress that they do more harm than good. Imagine a bad cook giving a bad advice to a good cook about cooking… This is the life of a good programmer lead by the IT manager who has little development experience.
Future IT managers should start working as software developer for at least 10 years and then only the best developers should become the IT managers.
